5 Old Ladies

The 5 Old Ladies are a living oracle - vessels of ancestral wisdom, figures of resilience, humor, and mystery. They appear as guardians and witnesses, representing the fading memory of the women from Ribeira of Porto. They are not nostalgic; they are alive.

When it became impossible to bring them physically into the performances, Luísa Mota transformed their appearance into sculptures — puppets as extensions of their presence, crystallized in an identity that was disappearing.

In 'Tuti Momo' (2015), the 5 Old Ladies were a group of 3 to 4 ladies playing cards and conversing. From time to time, a visiter would appear and ask them a question, to which they would answer. They became clairvoyants, wise with the ancestral knowledge.

When they weren't physically present, a collection of videos was made, comprising of different responses that the visitor could choose from after posing their question.
